Degree Show Set Up

The Bath Spa Degree Show commences on the 10th June 2017, so, on the week of 15th May, we, as first years were set the task of filling in and helping the bits and pieces that third years needed assistance with.

On the 16.05.17, myself and 2 other students helped to fill, sand and paint a wall white for a students work, this involved working in pattern, making sure every one had an equal job, we spent a couple of hours doing this. Then after, assisted another third year with painting their floors white for the show.

On the 18.05.17, myself and about 10 other students. We started at 10am, with a briefing of what the task would involve. We were to create a large plaster sculpture, due to the nature of the material, this involved lots of hands, and to be done in a time slot! While the plaster was being mixed, we had to lay the fabric and scrim with the canvas allowing an even surface. When the plaster was ready, we had to get on our hands and knees while technician, Gareth poured the plaster, we all were spread out and had to evenly smooth the plaster and place canvas over it and pat it down after. It was then hoisted up, and the piece was complete. This was quite a tiring experience, however beneficial, and we learned even more about health and safety and how fragile equipment can be, and the importance of team work.

On the 19.05.17, this was the last ‘official day’ of degree show set up, I was asked to help a different third year hold together her sculptural piece whilst she attached it with glue, as,  last minute her piece took an unexpected change. Myself and two fellow students helped her piece it together, and work out the best way to display. It took time and skill, as the sculpture followed a colour scheme and had to be connected a certain way. Due to it being the last day, and being under time regulation, this process helped us, as a team learn how to work under pressure and resolve issues thoroughly.
